Dragon Poem– Imagination, Messy Rooms, and Playful Kids

A little boy with a big imagination telling a story about a green dragon who made his room a mess, for My Poetry Corner.
It Wasn’t Me, It Was Fireball!

When a Messy Room Means Magic Was Made

In today’s My Poetry Corner, I’m sharing a poem that brings together two things I absolutely love: childhood imagination and that classic mom moment — hands on hips, surveying the damage.

Dragon was inspired by my grandson Aiden. He’s full of imagination play — always creating adventures, often with his brother and sister. In this Kids Moments book, he even shared a line art drawing of a dragon that helped bring this poem to life.

I could just picture it: His mom walks in, sees the chaos, and starts the “clean your room” speech…Only for Aiden to launch into another fantastic tale — this time, about a wild green dragon who caused the mess. And like any good mom, after the clean-up, she sends him right back outside to play, where he can let the dragon loose without knocking down toys.

This poem is all about the balance between rules and play — and the way imagination makes even the smallest mess worthwhile.

Dragon

Aiden loves to play pretend

A dragon was his friend

As one might guess

Aiden’s room was a mess

Hands-on his mom’s hip

And a stiff upper lip

“What happened to this room?”

Mom said, ready to fume.

Aiden started another one of his tales

He told of the green dragon with scales

Around the room, the dragon would fly

Knocking things off as he flew by

He’d land on the bed

Messing up the spread

His tail would sway

Swishing the toys every which way

After his tale, his mom would grin

And tell him to clean up his room again

To keep his room clean for a day,

She’d say, “You and your dragon go out and play.”

Reflection on My Dragon Poem

This poem always makes me smile because it captures what I’ve seen so many times with Aiden — his wild stories, his spark of creativity, and how imagination can turn chaos into something magical.

As parents and grandparents, we know the mess can drive us nuts… but when we pause and listen to the story behind it, there’s usually a beautiful tale waiting to be told.

This poem is a love letter to all the messy rooms filled with dragons, adventures, and creativity. And to the moms who sigh, grin, and say, “Go outside and keep imagining — just not in here.”
