When Imagination Takes the Wheel

In today’s My Poetry Corner, I’m sharing a poem that brings a big smile to my face, because it reminds me of my son Kyle and the magic of imaginative play.

Kyle’s Travels is about a child dreaming of all the ways to explore the world — cars, planes, rockets, elephants, buggies — but what I love most is where the poem ends: In the library. With a book.

As a mom, I loved listening to my kids make up stories while they played. The way they turned cardboard boxes into race cars or couches into mountains. That kind of imagination is powerful. And honestly, I think we all need a little more of it.

This poem is a reminder that you don’t need money, gas, or a passport to travel. All you need is a book… and a little imagination.

Kyle’s Travels

Kyle wanted to travel far.

He started driving a car.

He ran out of gas.

Kyle wanted to travel fast.

He rode on a plane.

He couldn't see the terrain.

Kyle wanted to travel to the stars.

His mother said a rocket would take him too far.

So he wasn't able to go.

Kyle wanted to travel to a show.

He thought he'd like to ride an elephant.

But he didn't know how to make an elephant prance.

Kyle wanted to travel to a faraway land.

He thought he'd ride a buggy on the sand.

He discovered there were too many hot days.

Kyle wanted to travel in so many ways.

He decided the library gave him a way to explore.

He opened a book and traveled forevermore.

Reflection on Kyle’s Travels Poem

Kyle's Travels poem reminds me how incredible children’s minds really are. Kyle didn’t just “play” — he imagined. He created. He dreamed up adventures out of thin air.

And as a mom, I saw how much joy that kind of play brought him. No screen, no app, no video game could replace that.

I believe imagination is one of the most powerful tools a child (or adult) can have. It helps us solve problems, think outside the box, and dream up better futures.

And in this poem, the ending is what matters most — Kyle finds the perfect way to travel: He opens a book. And with it, he can go anywhere.

If we could all hold onto that kind of wonder, this world would be a brighter place.
