A Moment from Childhood, Captured in a Poem

This poem came from a quiet moment at the doctor’s office with my son Chris, who was around 9 years old. We were both getting bored, and instead of screens (which weren’t around then), I had a poetry book and paper. We turned a waiting room into a poetry challenge. I chose the poem style. He chose the topics, and we each had to write a poem in this mirrored style before his name was called. Chris won the game. I came out with a memory that I treasure.

Reflection on My Class Poem

Writing my Class Poem was both a creative break and a sweet bonding moment with my son. He always had an imagination and intelligence. It was fun to play these kinds of games with him. If it were today, it wouldn't be the same. The screens have taken over. It's hard to get people to converse at the same table. Look around the restaurant. I still smile when I read this poem. It's special to me.

This poem captures how a child sees education in layers—from the ringing bell to the hope of a successful future. It reminds me how quickly kids grow and how small moments like this can stick with us for a lifetime.

The Style Behind the Words

Poetry Style Name: Mirror Poem (also called Reverse Poem)

  • Structure and Form: 14 lines with a midpoint (marked by ~Class~) that mirrors the first half

  • Meter: Short, steady lines to mirror order and structure in the classroom

  • Rhyme and Rhyme Scheme: No formal rhyme, free verse

  • Sound and Rhythm: Even-paced with a listing rhythm to reflect the routine of school life

  • Poetic Devices:

    • Repetition: “Successful future / Future successful”

    • Parallel Structure: Each line reflects and reverses the previous in mirrored order

    • Theme Symmetry: Idea of beginning (bell ringing) and ending (future success) cycling together
