A Playful Moment with Wendy’s Bouts-Rimés
Not every love story begins with a perfect evening. Today in My Poetry Corner, I’m sharing a poem that began as a writing challenge — and turned into a full romantic adventure.
Wendy’s Bouts-Rimés was written using a poetic game where my friend Wendy gave a list of random words. Then I had to create in-line rhyming words to build a story. The result? A quirky, chaotic date filled with late arrivals, spilled oil, and a sweet ending under the night sky.
Wendy’s Bouts-Rimés
Skip realized he was late for his first date.
How could he be a ditz when Sally is a blitz?
In a splash, he made a quick dash
To the florist knowing the power of a flower
Adding chocolate would be twice as nice.
Sally left her house in her favorite white blouse.
Sally went down the ally,
In her car, to a local bar and grille.
She cringed when the car hit the toad in the road.
She got out of her car and noticed oil on the soil.
She shrugged; no need to toil; it was only a little oil.
She sat in the bar to wait and wondered why Skip was late.
She said, “You’re Late, Mate.”
He said jokingly, “Take a chill pill.”
“Pretty dove; these are for you, my love.”
Out came chocolates and flowers, and he saw its powers.
Her heart did melt when he expressed the love he felt.
After dinner, they took a walk and had a nice talk.
They walked about a mile through the garden tiles.
The light was no longer bright.
They knew it was the night's end, kissed, and said goodnight.

Reflection of My Wendy’s Bouts-Rimés Poem
I wrote Wendy’s Bouts-Rimés poem using a fun poetic challenge between my friend, Wendy, and me. My other co-worker and friend, Skip, is in the story. I saw this poem style and wanted the challenge. It was difficult because, as you see in the highlighted words, she picked some really weird and challenging words. It was difficult to put them into a woven story. It started as a fun writing prompt, but became something more: a lighthearted love story about how even messy nights can lead to real connection.
Love doesn’t always come wrapped in perfect timing or smooth plans. Sometimes it comes with awkward moments, roadblocks, and unexpected joy — and that’s what makes it unforgettable.
If this poem looks like a challenge you can take on, get a friend to give you a list of word. Make in-line rhyme with each word and try to make a story. I challenge you!
The Style Behind the Words
Poetry Style Name: Bouts-Rimés (structured rhyme challenge)
Structure and Form: Fast-moving short lines, each ending with a forced rhyme word
Meter: Irregular — driven more by the rhyme word list than natural rhythm
Rhyme and Rhyme Scheme: Rhyming words appear in every second line, or close pairs — many AABB sequences built from the rhyme list
Sound and Rhythm: Playful, conversational, and quirky — rhythm shifts to make room for the forced rhymes
Poetic Devices:
Bouts-rimés challenge: Using an external list of rhyme words as creative constraints
Imagery: Flowers, spilled oil, walking through a garden — visuals support the romantic chaos
Tone: Humorous, awkwardly charming — captures the unpredictability of dating
Narrative Arc: Begins in a rush, hits obstacles, ends with a kiss — a full romantic comedy in poem form
